Privacy Policy

Hey, let’s talk privacy. We know it’s a big deal – especially when you’re dealing with tools that touch the core of your device. We’re not fans of legalese either, so here’s the straight scoop on what happens (and doesn’t happen) with your info when you interact with Magisk.io.

Our Core Belief: Less is More (Seriously!)

Frankly, we built Magisk because we value control and transparency. That extends directly to your data. We have zero interest in tracking you, profiling you, or selling your information. That’s just not who we are or why we do this.

What We Do See (Mostly Just the Basics):

  1. Visiting the Website (magisk.io):
    • Like nearly every website, our server logs basic stuff: your IP address (think: general location, not your street address), browser type, which pages you looked at, and when. Why? Mostly to understand traffic patterns (e.g., “Wow, lots of people are looking at the install guide today!”) and catch anything fishy. We don’t use this to track you personally. It’s anonymized and aggregated pretty quickly.
    • Cookies? We use the absolute minimum – typically just a session cookie to make sure the site functions smoothly while you’re browsing. No creepy ad trackers hiding here.
  2. Downloading Magisk:
    • When you grab the installer zip or APK directly from magisk.io, we see the download request (again, IP, file name, timestamp). That’s it. No registration, no sign-up.
  3. Using the Magisk App (Magisk Manager/App):
    • This is crucial: The Magisk app itself, running on your phone, does NOT send your personal data, device info, root status, or module list back to us or any server by default. It operates locally on your device.
    • The only exception: If you choose to use the built-in updater within the Magisk app, it needs to check our GitHub repository to see if a new version exists. This check sends minimal, non-identifiable info about your app version (like “is v27.0 installed?”) to GitHub. It doesn’t send your device model, IMEI, phone number, or anything personal. GitHub might log the request per their own policies.

What We Don’t Do (The Important Stuff):

  • We don’t collect your name, email, address, or phone number unless you explicitly give it to us (like emailing support – and even then, we only keep it to help you).
  • We don’t track your browsing habits across the web. (Seriously, we hate that too).
  • We don’t sell, rent, or trade your data. Full stop.
  • We don’t secretly monitor what you do with Magisk on your device. That’s your business.
  • We don’t require any account to download or use the core Magisk tools.

What About GitHub?
Since our code and releases live on GitHub (github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk), downloading from there or interacting with issues/pull requests means you’re also subject to GitHub’s Privacy Policy. We don’t control that, but it’s a trusted platform for open-source development.

Your Control & Choices:

  • Browser: You can adjust cookie settings or use privacy-focused browsers/extensions. The site will still work fine.
  • Magisk App: You can disable the automatic update check in the app settings if you prefer to manually check for updates.
  • Emails: If you ever email us, you can ask us to delete the conversation later.

The “Why Bother Writing This Then?” Part
Honestly? Because it’s the right thing to do. Even though we collect almost nothing, you deserve to know exactly what’s happening. Transparency builds trust, and trust is essential when you’re giving people powerful tools.

Real Talk: The internet isn’t perfect, and no data transmission is 100% secure. We implement reasonable measures to protect the minimal info we handle, but absolute guarantees are impossible. We promise to always prioritize your privacy and handle any data we do encounter responsibly and minimally.

Changes?
If we ever do need to change how we handle something (which is unlikely, given our philosophy), we’ll update this page. It won’t be buried; we’ll note the date clearly at the top.

Got Questions?
If anything here is unclear or you have concerns, reach out. We’re real people who care about this project and its users.
